In the 1990's, Marinepolis Sushi Land Japan representatives were impressed by
the consideration being paid to people with disabilities. The question
was asked, "is there a way to uniquely serve sushi to those who are not able to come to our restaurants?" Today
in Japan, Marinepolis Sushi Land portable conveyor-belts service
retirement homes, children's events and private parties and go by the
name of "Party Kun".
Since the Japanese name translates to "Party Boy", it was necessary
to find a new name that would not give the wrong impression to US
customers. A naming contest was held in 2002 and the best entry that
represented the concept (a portable sushi conveyor that operates
independently of the restaurants) was "Sushi Island".
